Perito Moreno Traditional Excursion:

Age Restrictions: All Ages.

Physical difficulty: Low

Duration: Full day (approximate pick-up 9:00 am – approximate drop off 04:00 pm)

It is the classical tour to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier without physical demands and with plenty of time to explore the National Park’s walkways and balconies.

The guided tour departs from your hotel in El Calafate and, after a journey of 80km through a succession of lakes, streams, forests and snowy mountains we arrive at the west end of the Magellan’s Peninsula, where the walkways complex and visitor’s area is located.
The walkways are arranged in several levels that allow you to see the glacier from different angles and balconies. Plenty of time will be granted to walk through the walkways and appreciate the Perito Moreno Glacier upfront. According to your fitness level, you will be able to reach the lowest balcony, which is the nearest to the glacier, or only get to the first balcony which is easily accessible for everyone and from where you have a spectacular view. An elevator is currently operating to facilitate access to the first balcony to people with reduced mobility.

Visit a ranch located within Los Glaciares National Park in front of Lake Roca in a scenery of unparalleled beauty.

Age Restrictions: All ages allowed.

Physical difficulty: Low

Duration: Half day

Departing from El Calafate (8:30 a.m or 4:30 p.m) along the gravel road of the Provincial Route 15, also know as “the road to the estancias”. Along the way it is common to come across condors, foxes and hares, with Cerro Frías taking centre stage. After crossing over the Río Rico, the landscape changes suddenly from the steppe-land to mountain scenery. The estancia is reached after travelling along the edge of Lago Roca and having entered Los Glaciares National Park.

The host guide welcomes you to the Estancia and takes you to the Quincho [rustic dining room] where you will be invited to have a hot drink (tea, coffee or mate) accompanied by home-made cakes and pastries. A good moment to pause and enjoy a magnificent view of the Andes .

The walk starts around the main building, the perfect example of a typical Patagonian estancia which was formerly devoted to sheep rearing and nowadays has become the most prestigious Hereford breeding ranch of these latitudes, while still retaining a small herd of sheep.

At the stables, those who have chosen the extra will do some horse riding  to explore the surroundings accompanied by a guide.

Meanwhile the rest of the group will tke a walk and admire the excellent views of the Southern Arm of Lago Argentino.  The footpaths lead through native woodland of lenga and ñire, a habitat for caranchos, Austral parakeets, hares, woodpeckers and  eagles.

You wil then meet again at the door of the shearing shed. This is a chance to see skilled hands at work.

You can also participate in milking cows, herding sheep or or see  a demonstration of horse handling skills. These activities are subject to the weather conditions.

When you return  to the Quincho where a whole lamb is being roasted on a vertical stake in traditional Patagonian fashion, some history of the region will be explained, with anecdotes and stories from the early settlers.

* A small amount of walking is involved.
* Please advise of any special requirement.
* Travel insurance is suggested.
